Each U.S. military service saw a notable decline in white recruits over the past five years, according to data obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation, likely factoring into the military’s crippling recruiting crisis.

The Army, Navy and Air Force missed their recruiting objectives by historically large margins in fiscal year 2023, which ended on Sept. 30, as the broader American public has grown wary of military service, according to Department of Defense (DOD) statistics, officials and experts who spoke to the DCNF. Since 2018, however, the number of recruits from minority groups has remained steady — or, in some cases, increased — while the number of white recruits has declined, according to data on the demographics of new recruits obtained by the DCNF.

Army Launches Second Phase of Brand Reboot Focused on ‘Relatability’

The Army released the second wave of promotional videos in its rebranding campaign Monday intended to boost its “relatability” to a diverse array of Americans amid persistent recruiting problems, according to Defense One.

The Army revived its 1980s slogan “Be All You Can Be” in March in hopes of attracting a new generation of future soldiers as recruiting fell 25 percent short of its goals in 2022 and is expected to mirror the shortfall in 2023. The “First Steps” series is meant to appeal to Gen Z’s desire for genuine engagement and emphasize knowledge, culture and trust, Ignatios Mavridis, the acting chief of Army Enterprise Marketing, told Defense One.

Army Touts Success of Fat Camp And Academic Prep Course After One Year, But Recruiting Still Lags Behind Goals

One year after implementation, the Army’s fitness and academic prep course has produced nearly 9,000 graduates, a 95% success rate that chips away at the Army’s recruiting struggles, the Army said Tuesday.

The Army brought an initial 1,900 potential recruits who couldn’t meet academic or physical fitness standards through a pilot program that began in August 2022 to boost test scores, and expanded the program to a second training base in January. Service leaders have also increased recruitment bonuses for soldiers to hopefully provide more incentive for prospective servicemembers to enter high-skilled military occupations, and over the past 12 months the Army gave out more than $15.5 million in bonuses to prep course graduates, according to an Army news article.

ESPN Writer: Diversity Hiring Is Good for NCAA Coaches, but Not for Recruiting

A contributing writer for ESPN recently argued in favor of diversity hiring for NCAA coaches but told Campus Reform that the standard should not apply for recruited athletes.

Richard Lapchick, who is a former professor of sports business management at the University of Central Florida, wrote on ESPN.com that the NCAA needs to increase gender and racial representation among coaches and other senior staff on athletics teams.
