Video Shows Jubilant Rashida Tlaib Making Her Way to House to Impeach Trump on ‘Solemn’ Day

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA-12) called it a solemn day, but Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) was ecstatic as she made her way to the House floor to cast a vote in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump.

“Hey, everyone. I’m on my way to the United States House floor to impeach President Trump on behalf of my incredible district, 13th District strong. Let’s do this,” a smiling Tlaib said in a video she posted to Instagram.

President Trump, who spoke at a rally in Tlaib’s home state on the night of his impeachment, responded to the video on Twitter Thursday morning.

“This is what the Dems are dealing with. Does anyone think this is good for the USA!” said the president.

A number of Democratic lawmakers, including Speaker Pelosi, dressed in black to reflect the solemness of the day.

“It was informal. It’s a somber day,” Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI-12) said of the fashion choice.

Speaker Pelosi made similar comments when she opened the House floor to debate the articles of impeachment.

“Today we are here to defend democracy for the people,” she said to applause. “I solemnly and sadly open the debate on the impeachment of the president of the United States.”

Pelosi scolded Democratic lawmakers when they cheered her announcement of President Trump’s impeachment.

Congresswoman Tlaib then joined activists from By the People, an organization seeking to remove Trump, in occupying the offices of Senate leadership Thursday morning.

“Can you imagine? They never thought this would even be possible. For us, it was the racist abuse of power,” Tlaib said while addressing a group of activists before the demonstration. “It was everything that he’s done. You know, it may have taken a Ukraine call to get us to 218 and get people to understand and wake up that we do have a president who thinks he’s king.”

Tlaib was one of the first members of Congress to call for impeaching President Trump and infamously told a group of supporters on the night of her being sworn into Congress that she was going to “impeach the motherf—.”

Tlaib voted in favor of both articles of impeachment—abuse of power and obstruction of Congress—and said in a statement after casting her votes that it was an “honor to vote yes today.”

“That the House voted to hold him accountable for his blatant abuse of power and obstruction of Congress sends a resounding message that we are a nation of laws and no one, not even the President, is above them,” said the freshman congresswoman. “This is—and always has been—about protecting the future of our nation and our democracy from corruption, abuse of power, criminal coverups, and bribery for generations to come. It was my honor to vote yes today because my two sons, their children, and their children’s children will look back on this time as one where justice prevailed in the people’s House.”
