President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are heading toward a rematch in November 2024 after racking up sweeping wins on Super Tuesday.
As of 11pm, Trump was the projected winner of all but one of the primaries that reported results, including California, Colorado, Alabama, Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Virginia, solidifying his political comeback.
The only state that former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, Trump’s last remaining GOP primary opponent, won was Vermont.
Biden had won Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Utah and Virginia as of 11pm. But he was projected to lose American Samoa.
“Today, millions of voters across the country made their voices heard—showing that they are ready to fight back against Donald Trump’s extreme plan to take us backwards,” Biden said in a statement posted on X Tuesday night. “Every generation of Americans will face a moment when it has to defend democracy. This is our fight.”
Trump said that he wants to unite the Republican Party and focus on defeating Biden.
“It is my honor to represent, not just the Republican Party, but our country in leading it back to health and prosperity,” he told Fox News.
In one of the night’s most closely watched non-presidential races, Democratic, Rep. Adam Schiff and former baseball star Steve Garvey, a Republican, advanced to the general election in the California race to succeed the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
Trump and Biden finished the largest primary night of the 2024 season with commanding leads in the delegate races. They both can wrap up nominations in the next month.
It is unclear if Haley plans to exit the race after her Super Tuesday losses. She did not deliver remarks on Tuesday night.
In his speech to supporters on Tuesday evening, Trump attacked Biden’s record and didn’t mention Haley by name.
“We’ve watched our country take a great beating over the last three years and nobody thought a thing like this would be possible. We wouldn’t have Russia attacking Ukraine. We wouldn’t have Israel being attacked,” he said. “Iran, as you know, was broke when I was running things, they were broke. They didn’t have money for Hamas. They didn’t have money for Hezbollah. We had no inflation. Inflation is destroying the middle class.”
Primary voters in states like Virginia cited immigration and the border as the number one issue of concern, according to exit polling.
Trump specifically criticized Biden for flying more than 320,000 migrants from the border into the U.S.
He referred to Biden as the “worst president in the history of our country.”
Many of the Republican candidates that Trump endorsed won their primaries on Tuesday.
In North Carolina, Lieutenant Gov. Mark Robinson, who Trump endorsed over the weekend, won the Republican nomination for governor.
Former Rep. Mayra Flores, R-Texas, who Trump also endorsed, won the Republican primary in Texas’ 34th congressional district and Rep. Monica De La Cruz, R-Texas, who Trump also endorsed, won in Texas’ 15th district.
