Democratic Michigan Sen. Gary Peters, who is facing a tough reelection in 2020, has turned to Sen. Elizabeth Warren for help with his fundraising efforts.
On Sunday, Peters’ supporters received an email from the Democratic presidential candidate asking them to donate money. Warren touted him as a public servant who will fight for “a country where everyone’s on equal footing” and a person the Senate needs.
“The Senate is chock-full of big egos and sound bites written for cable news. But you won’t see any of that from Gary. We’ve worked together for years, and he has the priorities of Michiganders at heart. It’s why he’s fought for funding to protect the Great Lakes, along with defending the Affordable Care Act and protections for preexisting conditions at all costs,” she wrote.
Peters is facing a GOP challenger in John James, whom President Donald Trump has called the “future of the Republican Party.” James announced his bid for Senate in June. A March Emerson poll had Peters beating James by one percent.
To finish her email, Warren asked people to donate to Peters in order to help secure a Democratic Senate majority.
The Michigan GOP issued a statement about Peters turning to the “Socialist Senator” for fundraising support.
“You can tell a lot about a person by who their friends are. Elizabeth Warren’s radical socialist agenda would put thousands of Michiganders out of work and strip millions of their employer-based healthcare,” Michigan Republican Party Chairwoman Laura Cox said. “Gary Peters enlisting Warren’s support shows that his real priorities lie with her out-of-touch agenda, and not with the people of Michigan.”

This year, Peters’ campaign raised $4.3 million from January 1 to June 30 while James raised $1.7 million in 2019 during the same time period.
Peters became Senator in 2015 after serving as a Michigan House of Representatives member for six years.
