Four Michigan Democratic Congressman Have Announced Their Support for an Impeachment Inquiry Since Monday

Four Michigan Democratic Congressman are open to an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump amid the Ukranian aid controversy.

Reps. Debbie Dingell (D-MI-12), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-08), Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) and Senator Gary Peters have all changed announced their impeachment inquiry decisions as more details about Trump allegedly withholding aid so the Ukranian government could investigate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden emerged.

Dingell and Slotkin both switched their stances Monday night.

“This country is divided. We cannot be divided on the rule of law. As an elected official my oath is to protect national security and the Constitution. After recent revelations, I support an impeachment inquiry because we must follow the facts and hold the President accountable,” Dingell tweeted.

Slotkin penned a Washington Post op-ed with six other freshmen Democratic representatives detailing why they would support impeachment “if the allegations are true.”

“We do not arrive at this conclusion lightly, and we call on our colleagues in Congress to consider the use of all congressional authorities available to us, including the power of “inherent contempt” and impeachment hearings, to address these new allegations, find the truth and protect our national security,” the op-ed reads.

Slotkin tweeted, “I swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution. If true, these new allegations against the President are a threat to our national security, and constitute an impeachable offense.”

Stevens announced her decision Tuesday morning

“Over the last several days, I have been deeply alarmed by reports of serious abuse of power by President Trump. The President is alleged to have used the power of his office to pressure a foreign head of state for his own personal political gain. Furthermore, the Director of National Intelligence continues to illegally withhold information about this matter from Congress,” she said.

Stevens also added that these actions represent impeachable offenses if found to be true.

After Slotkin and Stevens announced their decisions, Michigan GOP chairman Laura Cox reacted on Twitter saying these two elected officials had joined Rashida Tlaib and other radical Democrats who already supported impeachment.

Furthermore, Cox said Democrats and media have conducted a witch hunt for three years trying to undermine the 2016 election.

“Time and time again their accusations have been proven false, and I find it shameful that Slotkin and Stevens have chosen to put their political ambitions ahead of the real issues facing their constituents,” Cox said.

Peters tweeted his support for an impeachment inquiry on Tuesday around lunch.

“Given the deeply troubling allegations before us, the Administration must turn over the whistleblower complaint to Congress so we can evaluate the facts. As a former Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and now serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee, I know there’s nothing more important than protecting our national security.I support the House taking actions that they deem necessary to get the facts and meet their constitutional oversight responsibility.”

As of now, all seven Michigan Democratic House of Representatives support impeachment proceedings. Also, the only conservative Congressional member to come out in support of impeachment was Michigan’s Justin Amash (I-MI-03).

A total of 158 House Democrats support investigating Trump for impeachment, according to CNN.
