Dozens of media outlets are reporting in unison that Donald Trump cannot stop the U.S. government from awarding birthright citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants. They claim this is the case because the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution requires it.

In reality, the legislative history of the 14th Amendment is clear that it only grants birthright citizenship to the children of people who are legally and permanently living in the United States. This does not apply to the children of illegal immigrants, temporary residents, visitors, or tourists.

While sometimes it is unavoidable, lawyers do everything they can not to become witnesses in their own cases. Such a contingency may require new counsel, adding to client expense. It also leads to some real ethical minefields. While as a witness they are obliged to tell the truth, they are also bound as lawyers by their duties of confidentiality and zealous advocacy for their clients, creating conflicts between these competing obligations.

Journalists, too, used to have certain ethical restrictions, some formal and some that arose as part of the culture. One of those restrictions is similar to that facing lawyers: journalists are not supposed to “become the story.” Journalists should be neutral conduits through which the facts are presented.

NBC News Announces Moderators for the Third GOP Primary Debate

NBC News announced Wednesday evening that its own Lester Holt and Kristen Welker will moderate the Republican National Committee’s (RNC’s) third GOP primary debate on Nov. 8 alongside Salem Radio Network’s Hugh Hewitt.

Holt is the anchor of NBC Nightly News, Welker moderates Meet The Press and Hewitt hosts The Hugh Hewitt Show, where he has interviewed various Republican primary candidates. The RNC is requiring 2024 hopefuls to surpass a 70,000 unique donor threshold, with at least 200 per 20 different states or territories, and has also upped its polling criteria for the candidates to make the third debate stage.
