U.S. House of Representatives Set to Vote on Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on two articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday.

“After a year-long investigation, it’s abundantly clear that the Secretary has willfully and systemically refused to comply with the law and breached public trust. The American people deserve better,” Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Mark Green (R-TN-07) said in a statement ahead of the vote.

“Secretary Mayorkas will remain a threat to national and border security, the safety of the American people, and the Constitution if he is allowed to stay in office. He needs to be impeached,” Green added on Monday.

The two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas were voted out of the House Homeland Security Committee by party lines last week after members of the committee debated for a total of 15 hours.

The committee’s process that led to impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas consisted of a year-long, five-phase investigation which included 10 full and subcommittee hearings, transcribed interviews of chief and deputy chief patrol agents, and five interim reports totaling nearly 400 pages.

Green has previously called the process “painstakingly thorough,” adding that the committee’s intent was to be “fair, comprehensive, and meticulous.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA-04) defended the House’s upcoming vote on the impeachment articles against Mayorkas, saying, “Desperate times call for desperate measures.”

“Secretary Mayorkas has openly defied federal law – openly, repeatedly engaged in a practice of defying the law that Congress has put on the books and previous presidents have signed. He has also lied to Congress – he has misrepresented facts over and over and because of that, he has obstructed congressional oversight,” Johnson said during an NBC interview on Sunday. “All of these are constitutional responsibilities that we are unable to fulfill because this cabinet secretary has decided to defy federal law. Extreme times, desperate times call for desperate measures and that’s where we are.”
