An ABC News crew asked Michigan voters for their thoughts on impeachment after President Donald Trump hosted a campaign rally in Battle Creek, Michigan last week.
“Oh, it’s shameful. It’s terrible. It’s all made up. You know, they just want him out. They hate him. They have Trump derangement syndrome,” said one voter while another claimed that the president is “getting railroaded.”
President Trump spoke to a massive crowd at the Kellogg Arena on the night of his impeachment, saying “crazy Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats have branded themselves with an eternal mark of shame.”
“It’s a disgrace. The Democrats took the people of Michigan for granted, but with us, you will never be forgotten again,” said the president.
One voter told ABC anchor Martha Raddatz that impeachment is a “terrible idea” and “obviously biased.”
“Fifty years from now I think people are really going to look down upon it,” he added.
Speaking to voters at a Battle Creek restaurant, one Michigander said she had doubts about impeachment helping the Democratic Party.
“I don’t think this is going to help the Democratic Party. I really don’t. In fact, I have great fear that the opposite is going to happen, but I don’t think you have a choice when you look at the rules, you look at the Constitution,” she told Raddatz.
“He will twist it to his advantage in a way he can. It will help him. It will just solidify his base,” said another Battle Creek resident.
One voter did say that she thinks the impeachment process gives Americans “a little bit more confidence in our government.”
“In the long run, no,” said a final Michigander interviewed by the ABC News crew in regards to whether impeachment will hurt the president. “This is just something that he’s going to have to get through and he will.”
President Trump narrowly won Michigan in 2016 over Hillary Clinton by just under 11,000 votes. According to campaign manager Brad Parscale, the president’s reelection team identified 20,202 voters (92 percent from Michigan) during the Battle Creek rally. Parscale said 15 percent of the voters identified haven’t voted in the last four elections and 17 percent were Democrats.
