Michigan State University has launched a website for undocumented students, according to a report by the Morning Watch.
MSU launched the website to provide information to and resources for ”undocumented students, refugees and recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program,” according to a letter sent to faculty leadership by Senior Advisor to the President for Diversity and Director of the Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives Paulette Granberry Russell. The letter was obtained by Morning Watch.
“The website reflects our policy of non-discrimination and commitment to current and prospective students who, regardless of immigration status are, or aspire to be Spartans,” Russell wrote in the letter. “MSU recognizes that students, staff and faculty with mixed-immigration status often face barriers and challenges as they navigate campus policies requiring support services to address their unique needs.”
The website, which is currently live, features contacts for the MSU College of Law Immigration Law Clinic and Office for Inclusion and Intercultural Initiatives, among others. It also has a frequently asked questions section, which includes questions like “What resources are available to DACA or undocumented students on campus?” and “Does MSU share student information with federal immigration officials?” The FAQs section also has information on what reasons immigration officials might be on campus and what authority they have, as well as financial aid information for undocumented students.
Russell said in the letter to staff that MSU’s goal with the website is “to reduce apprehension, confusion, and make more transparent our resources for those who live, learn and work at Michigan State or desire admission to MSU.”
She also said that the school aims to support students “from all backgrounds, consistent with our values and policies that include nondiscrimination.” MSU’s nondiscrimination policy can be found here.
Russell encouraged all departments to provide a link to the resource on their website. The website for undocumented students can be found at undocumented.msu.edu.
