Michigan Sees Largest Single-Day Increase of Coronavirus Cases

Michigan saw its largest daily increase of confirmed coronavirus cases on Friday with nearly 2,000 new cases confirmed, according to analysis from MLive.

Michigan confirmed 1,953 new cases of COVID-19, according to data published by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The new cases bring Michigan’s total up to 12,744. The jump was the state’s largest single-day increase and the fourth consecutive day with more than 100 new cases, MLive said.

The MDHHS also announced 62 new deaths, bringing Michigan’s total deaths from the virus up to 479.

The City of Detroit has been hardest hit, with 3,550 confirmed cases and 117 deaths. Detroit is followed by Wayne County at 2,546 confirmed cases, Oakland County at 2,540 confirmed cases and Macomb County at 1,560 confirmed cases. Wayne County and the City of Detroit are counted separately.

A spokesperson with the MDHHS told The Michigan Star last week that the high number of positive test results may be a result of targeted testing, as well as the fact that many of the labs doing testing are located in the southeastern part of Michigan, which has “known community spread.”

“This has led to higher testing rates of southeast Michigan residents and a higher number of positive results,” the spokesperson said in an email last week.

There have been confirmed cases of the coronavirus in 70 of Michigan’s 83 counties. Some counties with no confirmed cases include Mason and Alcona, as well as several in the Upper Peninsula.

Michigan has tested nearly 38,000 people for the virus, with just over 28,000 of the tests coming back negative, according to data from the MDHHS. Roughly 26% of the tests came out positive.

MDHHS also showed that the majority of confirmed cases — 20 percent — is among people ages 50 to 59. The majority of deaths — 35 percent — are among those ages 80 and older.

As of Friday afternoon, there are nearly 240,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and more than 5,400 deaths in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
