The Michigan House of Representatives passed a resolution on Tuesday to reaffirm the Second Amendment rights of Michigan residents to own and carry firearms.
The resolution, sponsored by Rep. Gary Eisen (R-81-St. Clair), says that Michigan Legislature will not pass laws that infringe on the Second Amendment, as well as protect Michigan residents from federal legislation that is “in violation of our constitutional right to bear arms,” according to the bill’s text.
“I’m committed to defending and advancing the all of fundamental liberties our Founding Fathers laid out in the Constitution – especially the Second Amendment, which is constantly under attack by those who want to limit the right of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves, their families and their property,” Eisen said in a statement. “We must stand strong against government overreach and ensure all law-abiding citizens continue to have the right to protect themselves in Michigan.”
Eisen said the bill was designed to protect law-abiding gun owners who own firearms for “self-defense, hunting and competition.”
The resolution, which passed 75-32, was also praised by Rep. Ann Bollin (R-42-Brighton).
Bollin also said she supported the Livingston County Board of Commissioners, which on Monday passed a resolution declaring the county a “Second Amendment Sanctuary,” according to the Livingston Daily. Although not legally binding, the resolution also reaffirms the county’s citizens’ rights to bear arms. It comes on the heels of similar resolutions being passed across Virginia following a rally in support of the Second Amendment, the Livingston Daily said.
“The freedom to bear arms is one of the most important rights granted to us in the documents on which our society was built,” Bollin said in a statement. “Sadly, this founding principle is frequently attacked. We must stand strong against unfair restrictions and stand up for the honest, law-abiding citizens of Michigan who carry to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm.”
