Michigan Dems Criticize U.S. Senate Candidate John James for Attending Out-of-State Fundraiser

The Michigan Democratic Party released a statement on Tuesday criticizing U.S. Senate candidate John James for attending an out-of-state fundraiser hosted by a member of President Donald Trump’s finance committee.

James, a Detroit businessman, announced he filed paperwork in June to run for the U.S. Senate, although he said he will hold an “official campaign kickoff” early next year.

Michigan Democrats criticized James for “leaving Michigan once again to rub elbows with national Republican big money donors” and questioned his dedication to the state.

“Today’s fundraiser combines two of John James’ favorite things: leaving Michigan and Donald Trump,”said Michigan Democratic Party Spokesperson Alex Japko. “Based on his campaign so far, it’s clear that James is spending far more time rubbing elbows with out-of-state wealthy donors and winning support from President Trump than listening to Michiganders. If he won’t make time for Michigan now, why would voters trust him to represent them in the Senate?”

The Michigan Democratic Party denounced James for “spending virtually all his time” with Republican donors and conservative media, while “barely showing his face in Michigan outside of conservative talk radio.”

The organization also lashed out on Twitter, asking when James was “going to make news for doing something in Michigan?”

James’ campaign has garnered support already, raising more than $1.5 million since he entered the race for Senate. The donations came from nearly 12,000 supporters and averaged $126, according to a statement from the campaign. The campaign also said that 71 percent of the contributions were $50 or less and 88 percent were $100 or less.

“In less than a month, our grassroots army showed its strength and our momentum,” James said in a statement. “Michiganders want change. We’re tired of career politicians failing us without consequence.”

James’ campaign also noted that his fundraising outpaced that of incumbent candidate Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) by 2-to-1 in the second quarter.
