Kamala Harris Still Mum but Expected to Concede Election to Donald Trump Later Today

by Debra Heine

After canceling her post-election speech at Howard University last night, Kamala Harris is expected to officially concede the 2024 presidential election to Donald Trump in a speech to the country at her alma mater in Washington D.C., at 6:00 pm this evening.

Last night, after Trump had won the crucial swing states of North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin,  the Harris Campaign told tearful Harris supporters at her watch party at Howard University that there were still “votes to count.”

“We still have votes to count. We still have states that have not been called yet. We will continue, overnight, to fight to make sure that every vote is counted, that every voice has spoken,” Kamala Harris’s campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond said, as the crowd thinned out. “So you won’t hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow.”

In a campaign memo late last night, Team Harris told supporters that they felt “good” about what they were seeing, and that last batches of ballots would be coming in in the wee hours of the morning.

“What we do know is this race is not going to come into focus until the early morning hours,” the memo said.

Trump is on track to win all seven swing states, North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Nevada, giving him 311 electoral votes. Trump is also projected to win the popular vote, with the president-elect currently on 51 percent of the vote to Harris’ 47.5 percent. Republicans, meanwhile, have won control of the U.S. Senate and are favored to keep the U.S. House.

Anti-Trump Republican Liz Cheney, who campaigned for Harris, wrote on X early Wednesday that “our nation’s Democratic systems functioned last night.” She called on Harris voters to accept the results of the election. “We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years,” she wrote.

Trump 2024 national press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News Wednesday morning that neither Joe Biden of Kamala Harris had reached out to Trump since he was projected the winner of the election.

“President Trump didn’t just defeat Kamala Harris, said Leavitt. “He defeated the big tech oligarchs who tried to silence him, the weaponized system of justice against him, and the fake news that has lied about him and his supporters for years. Greatest political comeback in HISTORY!”

Trump took to the stage in West Palm Beach, Florida, early Wednesday morning to address his supporters.

“This is a magnificent victory for the American people, that will allow us to make America great again,” he said. “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate.”

“It’s a political victory that our country is never seen before, nothing like this,” he added. “I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honor of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president.”
