Former President Donald Trump on Monday knocked the ongoing bipartisan infrastructure negotiations between a small group of Senators.
“Senate Republicans are being absolutely savaged by Democrats on the so-called “bipartisan” infrastructure bill. Mitch McConnell and his small group of RINOs wants nothing more than to get a deal done at any cost to prove that he can work with the Radical Left Democrats,” Trump said in a statement.
The negotiations have carried on for several weeks after Republican lawmakers knocked President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats for attempting to pass a partisan infrastructure plan through budget reconciliation.
The talks, led by Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), have focused on a compromise to fund “hard” infrastructure projects — such as roads, bridges, and airports.
However, after the group reached an agreement last month, President Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi promised their voting base that they would not agree to the compromise unless Democrats were allowed to continue to pass their strictly partisan bill that would add trillions in new spending.
“I expect that in the coming months this summer, before the fiscal year is over, that we will have voted on this bill, the infrastructure bill, as well as voted on the budget resolution. But if only one comes to me, this is the only one that comes to me, I’m not signing it. It’s in tandem,” Biden said after announcing the deal.
Furthermore, even with a true compromise, it is unclear if the bill would pass Congress. Senator Bernie Sanders and other progressives have come out against the deal.
“It is so important to him that he is agreeing to almost anything. Don’t do the infrastructure deal, wait until after we get proper election results in 2022 or otherwise, and regain a strong negotiating stance,” Trump said in his statement; concluding, “Republicans, don’t let the Radical Left play you for weak fools and losers!”
