A wooden monument mocking President Trump in Slovenia – the birthplace of his wife, Melania Trump – has been burned to the ground, with an alleged arsonist reportedly starting the fire, according to Breitbart.
ABC News reported that “the wooden 26-foot high monument, a depiction of the president in a suit with his right arm raised, was built to depict two Trumps: A stern-looking version, and an angry version with pointed teeth that is triggered by mechanical devices inside.”
The monument showed Trump with his trademark hairstyle, white shirt, blue suit, and a long red tie. His right arm with a clenched fist was built to raise high like the Statue of Liberty in New York City. It was erected last year in the small northeastern village of Selo to act as a criticism of populist politics. Its creator, Tomaz Schlegl, named it “statue of liberty,” AFP reported.
“Like all populists, the statue has two faces,” Schlegl said in 2019, according to ABC News. “One is humane and nice, the other is that of a vampire.”
Although the monument quickly became a tourist attraction, some local villagers were unhappy with its appearance, pledging to torch it by Halloween, Oct. 31. It had to be moved to another village in the area.
Milan Balazic, the mayor of the town of Moravce, Slovenia, told ABC News the torching of the monument was a “symbol of intolerance toward artistic projects in our society.”
Slovenian police are searching for the arsonist behind the attack.
A similar wooden statue of first lady Melania Trump was unveiled in her native town of Sevnica.
