Rep. Slotkin Should Not Be Surprised by Boos She Receives at Town Hall for Supporting Impeachment Against Trump

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-08) is not exactly drawing praises from her constituents for her calls to impeach President Donald Trump, newly released video shows.

A Twitter video at a town hall meeting shows fellow Michiganders energetically booing the Democratic representative.

GOP Deputy Press Secretary Mike Joyce tweeted, “How are Michiganders taking to Elissa Slotkin’s calls to impeach @realDonaldTrump? Not well. #MI08 #StopTheMadness”.

Slotkin was booed by some when she brought up the issue of impeachment; others shouted “not true” and “fake news” when she claimed Trump asked a foreign leader to “dig up dirt” on a political opponent.

This reaction should come as no surprise to Slotkin.

Even as she has called for an impeachment based on Trump’s conversation with a “junior partner,” aka Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, a sovereign nation, the GOP has used her own incendiary comments to raise funds to defeat her in 2020, The Michigan Star reported.

Ronna McDaniel, GOP Chairwoman, tweeted, “We already raised over $500K to beat Democrat Elissa Slotkin next November. She promised she’d work with @realDonaldTrump, yet she’s backing this impeachment charade. Now we’re letting her district know she wants to override their votes, which helped the President win in 2016!”

The GOP’s efforts are paying off.

Nikki Snyder, a 35-year-old member of the Michigan state Board of Education, last week announced she will challenge Slotkin by running for Congress, The Star reported. She is the first Republican to challenge Slotkin, who previously was running uncontested.

The announcement coincides with the declaration on Slotkin’s part to support impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. Following the whistleblower complaint reported on September 18, Slotkin has been under pressure to take a side on the impeachment case.

CNN recently visited Macomb County, Michigan to ask voters about the impeachment inquiry, and found that most people they spoke to saw “impeachment as little more than politics,” The Star reported.

Jamie Roe, a Michigan-based political strategist, said impeachment will only help Republicans.

“If they’re going to try to impeach him on this Ukraine business, I think that they are driving themselves straight back to the minority in the House,” said Roe.
