CNN recently visited Macomb County, Michigan to ask voters about the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, and found that most people they spoke to saw “impeachment as little more than politics.”
“I think it’s a lot of just people don’t like him and they want him out of office—the left and the media,” one voter told the network.
One Trump voter said he was considering voting for Joe Biden before the Democrats launched the impeachment inquiry.
“They are there for one thing now and one thing only and that’s to try to impeach the president,” he said.
Jamie Roe, a Michigan-based political strategist, said impeachment will only help Republicans.
“If they’re going to try to impeach him on this Ukraine business, I think that they are driving themselves straight back to the minority in the House,” said Roe.
Reps. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-08) and Haley Stevens (D-MI-11) both returned to their home districts for town halls last week and struggled to defend the impeachment inquiry in front of angry voters.
Slotkin was booed by some constituents when she brought up the issue of impeachment, while others shouted “not true” and “fake news” when she claimed President Trump asked a foreign leader to “dig up dirt” on a political opponent.
“I knew that it was going to be an issue back here at home, but I made that decision because sometimes there are some moments in life beyond politics and I felt this moment was that,” Slotkin said in defending the inquiry.
Meanwhile, Stevens hosted a town hall Tuesday evening to discuss gun control, but Fox 2 reports that the event “ended early as tempers flared and the arguing turned to shouting.”
“The NRA has got to go,” Stevens shouted at one point during the event. The issue of impeachment also came up during the town hall.

“She’s not governing from the middle,” said Gabriel Costanzo, a Republican member of the Walled Lake City Council, in an interview with Reuters. “Impeachment pushed a lot of people over the edge with her.”
“They’ve already put him (Trump) through the wringer,” said one constituent. “They’re just grasping at straws.”
After Stevens’ town hall, Trump supporters lined the streets outside and booed the first-term congresswoman as she drove away.
