Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin Accuses Trump of Anti-Semitism, Calls His Comments ‘Toxic’

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI-08) called President Donald Trump’s comments “toxic” after the president questioned Democrats who failed to speak out against Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI-13) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN-5).

Slotkin, who is Jewish, discussed what she called the president’s use of an “anti-Jewish trope” in a series of three tweets Tuesday night.

“Unfortunately, once again, I am having to speak out about the use of an anti-Semitic trope by the President. When the President calls Jews ‘disloyal’ for voting for Democratic candidates, the implication is that American Jews have a dual loyalty — to our country and to Israel,” she said.

Slotkin was refering to comments Trump made Tuesday in the Oval Office.

“Where has the Democrat Party gone … when they’re defending these two people over the state of Israel?” he said. “And I think any Jews who vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.”

Slotkin said this was an “old attack” that generations of Jewish people have experienced.

She concluded her Twitter thread by saying the president’s comments try to make Israel a “partisan issue.”

“The President’s comments continue a deliberate and misguided attempt to make support for Israel a partisan issue, breaking with a bipartisan tradition that goes back to the founding of the state of Israel. It is simply toxic.”

Earlier this week, Trump was critical of Tlaib and Omar after they held a press conference to discuss being barred from traveling to Israel.

“Sorry, I don’t buy Rep. Tlaib’s tears. I have watched her violence, craziness and, most importantly, WORDS, for far too long,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “Now tears? She hates Israel and all Jewish people. She is an anti-Semite. She and her 3 friends are the new face of the Democrat Party. Live with it!”

Previously, Slotkin accused Republicans of opposing anti-Semitism to receive donations from the Jewish community.
